Summer Astrophotography: Your Guide to Capturing the Night Sky
Summer isn't just for sunsets and road trips it's also one of the best times of year to experience the magic of astrophotography.
From the glowing Milky Way stretching across the horizon to dazzling meteor showers and lunar events, the warmer months offer countless opportunities to create unforgettable images. Whether you're photographing the stars for the first time or adding another Milky Way image to your portfolio, summer skies have something for every photographer.
Why Summer is Peak Astrophotography Season
For photographers across North America, July and August are prime Milky Way season. During these months, the bright galactic core rises high into the night sky, making it easier to photograph than at almost any other time of year. New moon nights offer the darkest skies and the highest contrast, allowing more stars and galactic detail to appear in your images.
Summer also brings some of the year's most anticipated celestial events:
Milky Way Season – Best photographed during moonless nights from late June through early September.
Southern Delta Aquariids & Alpha Capricornids – These late July meteor showers can reward patient photographers with bright streaks across the sky.
Perseid Meteor Shower – One of the most popular meteor showers of the year, peaking each August with the potential for dozens of meteors every hour under dark skies.
Late Summer Lunar Eclipse – An incredible opportunity to photograph Earth's shadow crossing the Moon.

Finding Dark Skies
One of the biggest challenges in astrophotography isn't your camera, it's light pollution. The farther you can get from city lights, the more stars you'll see. National parks, state recreation areas, and designated dark-sky parks are excellent destinations for planning an evening shoot. Before heading out, check weather conditions, moon phases, and cloud cover to maximize your chances of success.
Arriving before sunset also gives you time to scout foreground compositions and safely set up your gear before darkness falls.
Essential Gear for Night Photography
The good news? You don't need a telescope to create incredible astrophotography. A basic setup includes:
A camera with manual controls
A fast wide-angle lens (f/2.8 or wider is ideal)
A sturdy tripod
A remote shutter release or interval timer
Extra batteries (they drain faster during long exposures)
A flashlight or headlamp with a red light mode
As you become more experienced, accessories like star trackers can allow for even longer exposures and reveal stunning detail within the Milky Way.
Camera Settings to Get You Started
Take a test shot, review your histogram and focus, then adjust your exposure as needed. Every scene is different, but these settings provide an excellent starting point
Shoot in RAW
Aperture: f/1.4–f/2.8
ISO: 1600–6400
Shutter Speed: 10–20 seconds
Manual Focus set precisely on the stars
White Balance: Around 3800–4500K
Don't Forget the Foreground
Some of the most memorable astrophotography images aren't just about the stars—they tell a story. Look for interesting foreground elements like:
Old barns
Lighthouses
Mountains
Trees
Lakes with reflections
Historic buildings
Desert rock formations
These subjects add depth, scale, and a sense of place while helping your Milky Way images stand out.
